Land Typing

Recognising natural underlayers for guidance in managing the whenua

A method addressing land systems, land typing provides a basis for understanding the whenua, the underlying natural diversity of Aotearoa lands, ecosystems and landscapes. The method assists people in “making sense” of different land and ecosystem typologies at various spatial scales when planning, designing and managing lands and waters. Underpinned by geomorphology, the information system is timeless and not vulnerable to upsets by land use or land cover change. It assists in referencing and reinstating the nature of place. The information is gradually being compiled in map, model and chart from broad scale to local detail.
